Sleds to Antarctica

Our Antarctica Sleds

National Geographic's "Antarctic Challenge"

In 1996, Outdoor Wood Furniture, Inc. of West Columbia  was  contracted by logistics company Adventure Network International of the United Kingdom to furnish 16ft. sleds and other wooden products for a National Geographic Society expedition to the Queen Maud Land region of Antarctica. The expedition to rockclimb a 2000ft. peak above the ice cap was guided by the late Alex Lowe, one of the world's top rated climbers, and documented by photographer Gordon Wiltsie for the National Geographic Magazine. A television crew for the magazine's Explorer Series were also on the expedition.

The sleds, made to be towed behind snowmobiles, were 16 feet long and capable of carrying a load of about 2500 pounds of gear and supplies. Also fabricated by
Outdoor Wood were large pine boxes for storage, and insulated floor panels to go inside the portable huts. The entire order was then driven to Charleston and loaded on to a C-130 Hercules cargo plane waiting on the tarmac.

The expedition with Wiltsie's spectacular photography is featured on the cover of the February, 1998 issue of
National Geographic Magazine. Also, look for Explorer's televised documentary of the trip titled "Antarctic Challenge", on TBS cable television.
